The GLBTs

Today's class in Psychology of Women, we had a panel of guest speakers from the GLBT association (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender)

It is a "Guess who is gay" seminar

So there were 5 students sitting in a row, we (students in the class) were allowed to ask any kind of questions except whether they like men/women/both.

and so, from our observation and their answers to our questions, we were to determine what sexual orientation they are. The panel is asked to leave the room and we went on with our discussion on why we think that he is gay/she is straight...

when the panel came in, they revealed their real sexual orientation.

It is an interesting session.

and the purpose is clearly to eliminate discrimination towards this group of people and to allow us as a society to understand more about them.

There are a few things that caught my attention throughout the whole class period.

1. When asked if they (the panel) thinks that being gay/lesbian is a choice or born this way. All of them answered is Not a choice.

2. The man who appeared to be most straight (with all the masculine characteristics) turns out to be gay.

3. There is one student from the panel who offered to explain what he thinks about gays and lesbians in the Christian context. According to him, the bible is always twisted in any way possible to fit the society's norm. e.g. the bible was used to justify slavery, justify against the rights of women, and now justify against homosexuality.

More and more people in the society is now opening up towards homosexuality and a person who opposes would be called an insensitive person or someone who does not know how to respect others. The society is moving as a whole towards understanding and acceptance. Everything is alright. It is just different stand point. and if you think that is wrong-that is just Your Point of view. or If you believe in that, That is also your point of view. There is no truth. Everything is subjective to your own opinion.
