True Forgiveness

Today in Old Testament lecture, we learnt about Imprecatory Psalms
(Psalms used to curse enemies) 

E.g. Psalm 137

"Blessed shall he be who takes your little ones

    and dashes them against the rock!"

What are the usage of this kinda psalms? 

It is often used to comfort the troubled. 

Imagine if you have just lost your loved ones in the most atrocious ways. It would be a lie if you are not angry about it. People use this psalm to pray and cry out to God. It is only through lamenting and pouring out that they can be released slowly from the hurt and anger that they are feeling. 

C.S. Lewis:

  The imprecatory psalms remind us that the absence of indignation(anger) may be an alarming symptom of the decline of righteousness and moral conviction.

In other words, don't hide nor fake your anger. Come to Him just as (broken, angry, hurt, confused, disappointed...) you are. Be real to God. 

We learnt that:

• Forgiveness doesn’t mean close one eye, forget about it, let that person get away with the wrong he has done to you.
• Forgiveness means you don’t take revenge, but you give it to God.
• Who do you think would do a better job in punishing him? You or God? Whose hands are bigger and more powerful. Leave it to God. It’s a process of leaving it to God.
• Come to a place where you can say “Ok, God will take care of it, so I can forgive”

Erich Zenger in the book "A God of Vengeance" says that:

The psalmists "affirm God by surrendering the last word to God. They give to God not only their lament about their desperate situation, but also the right to judge the originators of that situation. They leave everything in God’s hands, even feelings of hatred and aggression."
